Chemical high-pressure air conditionier cleaning twice a year is a prerequisite for maintaining the warranty of manufacturer for most air conditioners. Of course, keeping the air conditioner clean is in the interest of the household. Failure to do so carries a risk of health, operational efficiency, and material damage.
Aircon cleaning
In terms of air conditioner cleaning, the most important unit is the evaporator located indoors. In cooling mode, dust stuck to its heat exchanger and fan blades (squirrel wheel) mixes with water and serves as a breeding ground for microbes. When cleaning the indoor unit, the entire plastic cover is removed. After chemical treatment, the surfaces of the units involved in the heat exchange are cleaned with a high-pressure water jet, which is directed into a collection bag installed around the indoor unit. The picture below shows the condition of the indoor unit of a split air conditioner before and after cleaning. The contamination occurred over a year by the end of the cooling season in the 7th district of the city center. The amount of airborne dust naturally affects the degree of contamination of the air conditioner, but annual maintenance of the unit is recommended from the end of the cooling season.
Portable air conditioner cleaning
In the case of mobile air conditioners, the heat exchangers are more freely separated from the casing, allowing air to pass through them better. In the case of such devices, the wet dusty medium is not separated from the air – it can dry out – so the possibility of microbial growth is lower. Nevertheless, cleaning the air conditioners is justified in order to maintain proper efficiency and technical condition. Cleaning mobile air conditioners begins with removing the entire casing. The heat exchangers are treated with chemicals and then washed clean with a high-pressure washer. After drying, the cleaned casing is placed on the device.
One of the reasons for the growth of microorganisms in split air conditioners is that the heat exchangers remain wet when the device is switched off. The air deflector blade that closes when switched off locks the moisture into the indoor unit. It is therefore recommended to use the device in „fan” mode before switching off in order to dry the device. Newer devices have an „antifungus” mode, which heats the heat exchanger after switching off, thereby drying out the wet dirt that has accumulated on it, which helps to reduce the growth of fungi and bacteria.
